A bunch of us took the train at 5 in the morning to Prora and Sissnitz on to the Baltic sea for a day trip. Went to go hangout by the ocean and look at this massive Nazi built holiday buildings that were unfinished and today sit mostly in ruins. Part of it has become a hostel now. Quite fun to climb around in. We brought our bikes and rode around from town to town.

Me and a few friends from work took advantage of the Shones Workende ticket on the DB train network and went to Essen in the Ruhr valley for the weekend. Since the pass only starts on Saturday we left Berlin in the middle of the night.
Took a nap at the Nordsee in Hanover while waiting for Fabien… who took a slightly different route to get to Hanover…
Finally made it to...

Today we went to the cold-war era abandoned US listening post Toffelsberg. It’s west of Berlin up a hill in this wooded area. Not much of a secret place. It’s pretty cool. My point and shoot camera broke, so everything is from my iphone. Really nice afternoon.
The Olympic stadium and Corbusier’s Berlin Unite in the trees.
Definitely a highlight to climb up...

I spent the last couple months in Chicago, Il. working at Skidmore Owings & Merrill and hanging out. It was really fun. Chicago is a cool place. Saw lots of cool buildings, got to meet some really cool people, ate good food.
I didn’t take too many photos for some reason… iphone photos:

After Berlin, went to Stockholm to hang out with Tom Chung for about a week. Stockholm is a really awesome city. Feels like Vancouver but everything is nicer. We hung out, mostly relaxed, saw some things, and had a bunch of Swedish coffee breaks.
We went around and looked at all these awesome furniture and housewares shops. Everyone really cares about their home and what they put in them....
I just returned from a 2 week European vacation. Here is part 1 of the trip from our study trip to Berlin courtesy of the German government.

Very excited to launch my website today! http://ryanmcclanaghan.com/
Huge thanks to Andy Chung for building the website!
My good friend Richard was kind enough to invite a bunch of us up to his family’s cabin a couple hours outside of Toronto for a weekend. We bought a suckling pig and had an outdoor pigroast. Other notable highlights: late night frozen lake walks illuminated mostly by sparklers, a bb gun pistol, and cold cold snow.
This little guy died [petrified and very dead squirrel] fell in the...
Hi,
Sorry for the lack of updates: been getting back to the school thing for the new semester.

Myself, Ayesha Moghul, and Richard Lam were awarded the first prize for the Young Leaders for Future Cities competition. We won a trip to Berlin in February. Pop champagne like the won the championship-game.
We went to Montreal for the award ceremony for the day (flew in for the morning and flew home in the early evening) and just had enough time to snag some st. viateur bagels before our...

Well, here’s an unenthusiastic blog post. Had to declare some sort of intent to do a thesis: I’ve so far decided to study the embassy as a collision of a number of things I’m interested in (building as symbol, international identity, “open” compound, a zone of other, secret spaces, the hallways of power). We had to do a poster so that’s what’s posted...
Went to Ottawa for the workshop related to the German Embassy competition we posted below. The Federal Republic of Germany was nice enough to send us Via Rail and and get us rooms for two nights at the Ottawa Jail Hostel. It’s a historical ex-jail turned hostel where you sleep in old cells. It was interesting. When we showed up there was one of those ghost walking tours happening.

Myself, Richard Lam, and Ayesha Moghal entered a student competition to design infill housing for Toronto hosted in conjunction with the German Embassy and were selected as one of the teams from U of T. We’ll be heading to Ottawa next week to participate in a series of workshops led by German building experts. After that, we’ll be submitting to hopefully go to Berlin in February.

I love riding on the train on the eastcoast around thanksgiving. This trip was no different.

Wrapped up this little side project - for some reason I felt like buying some white linen and dye it with indigo dye, it kind of transitions from deep black almost to a navy blue. The accidental result was partially dieing my hands blue for a bit. Well I noticed it at least.
It’s been pretty chill here lately. Aside from the usual work load (nothing really worth posting up yet), managed to...

Will Blair of http://sharkhitecture.tumblr.com/ is going to Japan for an amazing 4 month architecture course. So we celebrated his departure and the end of summer with a dinner at Shabusen where korean bbq and all you can consume sushi merge in ways only Vancouver can pull off properly. Well, I guess this breaks my no-reblog policy, but this is still close to original content: shot and edited by...

Fraser, Will and I entered an architecture/landscape competition to design a skateboard plaza for Rotterdam. Unfortunately we did not place and therefore did not get 2,000 Eurodollars. Anyways, here are some images from the competition entry.
The design was a pretty modest proposal of planted areas, seating areas/skateable ledges, lighting features, and two transitioned “waves”.

I think swimming has become a favorite pastime of mine this summer: third beach, spanish banks, kit’s pool…etc. Soaking in the water then lounging around in the sun. Getting on island time - no watch, no worries.
Went for an overnight camping expedition this weekend near Whistler. We camped at the famous Lake Eatabagadicks where we jumped off of the diving board, lazed about on the...
